Work Text:
"J-John, I need to get back to work-"
"Do you, indeed..."
I made this in 2004 after reading Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Back then I couldn't decide whether these two were Holmes and Watson or Hawley Griffin and Henry Jekyll. Eventually I decided to draw both couples in one picture, giving the title "Invisibility" to the single book that lies beyond the stack (the title has now been removed) as well as adding a portrait of "The Woman" on the wall for the sake of ambiguity. Whether the man whose lips part in a silent moan of ecstasy was Holmes or Griffin was up to the viewer to decide.
It's been a summer of trying to stay away from anything new, from self-imposed challenges, internal conflict, antagonism and the desperate -but crippling- need for approval. What I got in return was a much-needed moment of absolute silence and the reassuring presence of old friends. Of a man who finds solutions to any problem and a doctor whose altruism is an integral part of his character as well as his profession.
After watching Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes for the first time since childhood I know now who are the men I painted back then, who they were all along. Two men of note - and passion.
