Work Text:

Donghyuck is straight.

He has been for 26 years and counting, but the moment he walks into the party he feels the air shift. Maybe he’s being just a tad bit dramatic but he feels it all the same.

The same feeling he had when he walked into the party where he had first gotten head in a bathroom.

Dropping his jacket off his shoulders, partly because of the heat and partly because he’s heard it works wonders with the ladies, he makes his way to the bar and sits down, pointing at a bright pink drink to order before turning his head towards the dance floor, or the floor where people are dancing.

The scene is too many colours from the lights and way too many people squeezing onto the small area that had been cleared for dancing. Donghyuck scans the floor to find someone interesting or even someone he knows but it seems that he’ll have to enjoy himself on his own today.

He hasn’t even gotten his drink when a guy walks up to him, which is decidedly not a first, but this guy is… for lack of better word, sexy. His lips are stretched into what Donghyuck would call a smile given the scenario. Way too many teeth greet him yet somehow it makes the guy look charming.

The man isn’t even dressed up like any of the guys that have approached Donghyuck before. None of the shimmery make up or glittery hair.

He’s just in a button up shirt tucked into black jeans, but the way the silk stretches over the expanse—that’s right expanse—of his chest is kind of insane. Even Jeno’s chest doesn’t stretch his shirts like that. Donghyuck briefly wonders how it would feel to touch.

The guy’s neck isn’t completely bare, though. There’s a delicate silver necklace that is only really noticeable because it glints under the harsh lights of the party. A little more staring confirms that it is indeed, a necklace with a cat pendant.

“Is this seat taken?” The man says, head now tilted towards the empty chair beside Donghyuck. Donghyuck doesn’t say anything, eyes still glued to the triangle of skin that the man’s button up allows.

“Excuse me?” The man asks again, his expression is different now, a lot cockier than when he first walked over. It jolts Donghyuck back into action.

“No, but I see so many other empty seats, why do you want this specific one?”

“So I can make sure that you didn’t dress up like that in vain,” The man says, smooth as he slides into the chair and turns his body to face Donghyuck.

Donghyuck’s eyes widen and the guy laughs. It’s a cheery sound but Donghyuck can’t focus on anything past the way this man seems to be eyeing him.

He feels tingly, is that weird? That’s probably weird, right?

And so he does what he always does when he’s confused. Pull out his phone from his pocket and type in Chenle’s number. On the second ring Donghyuck realizes that everything he says to Chenle, the strange too many teeth hot guy will also hear.

“Hello? Aren’t you at a party?” Chenle’s voice crackles through the speaker and Donghyuck presses his phone closer to hear over the music.

“Am I gay?”

“Huh?” Chenle sounds bemused and entirely too done with Donghyuck’s bullshit.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I can’t be the one telling you about your sexuality. It's like, 2026. I would get canceled.”

Donghyuck groans, hanging up and turning to face the stranger whose smile seems to have grown. At least this time Donghyuck knows why he’s smiling.
