Commander Shepard didn't grow up dreaming of the stars. She grew up in the lower wards of New York, learning that survival means never letting anyone get close enough to hurt. The Alliance gave her a purpose, missions, rank—forged her into a weapon. It was enough, until Saren, until the hunt for a rogue Spectre pulled her into an alliance with an asari archaeologist who refused to be pushed away and breached her walls.
This is the story of the woman behind the legend: a street kid who became a soldier, a soldier who became a symbol, and the slow, unwilling process of learning that letting someone in doesn't have to mean losing them. Follows the events of Mass Effect 1, with original characters, deepened backstory, and a few sharp edges of its own.

During a mission to investigate toxic chemicals leaking into Mindoir’s atmosphere, Commander Jane Shepard and Garrus Vakarian uncover a far stranger problem when Joker reports movement in the Normandy’s cargo bay. What they find are two human stowaways. One, an angry and defensive child with a sharp tongue. The Other, a meek, nonverbal younger child who appears to be ill.

Shepard had had a tough life. She found some good friends and has made some annoying enemies. Her life is complicated but enjoyable. Routine mission after mission, working up the N ranks. Her most recent mission to Akuze seems routine, and she even met a cute turian before she shipped out. Looking forward to meeting up with him after her mission, Shepard heads out, not knowing how this one mission will shape her future with the Alliance. Her best friend, Toombs, seems excited to work with her again. “At least the planet has a cool name. Akuze. Definitely sounds like something I could get tattooed on me once we get back. Maybe come up with a cool story about how I won a fight there."
