Summary
The advantage of an early start seems to come with an unforeseen downside—while there’s few around to bother her, it also means she lacks a crowd to mask her presence. Loiterers are certainly common around the runners, but they’re the kind of people allowed to do that sort of thing. Maria is not.
Even so… this is meant to be a gift for Mr. Neuras. He deserves it of her to be brave.
Taking a deep breath, Maria clutches her pad of paper to her chest and begins the long trek across the plaza.

“Right,” Rantaro slowly replies. “Well.” He isn’t sure why he does it. His arms just… go out, mechanical and stiff as a board. “Let me take her.”
Already immensely uncomfortable, he tries not to lose his patience at Saihara’s immediate deer-in-headlights imitation. It’s clear he wants to question the offer, and it makes sense to—Rantaro’s questioning it himself. It’s just… hell if he’s going to let a friend know what this kind of guilt can feel like. At six months old, Misaki will never consciously remember this day, but a part of her will. Children are terrifying like that.
Saihara wants her to have a good afternoon. Rantaro can help make that happen.
