In the background, the clock ticked. Somehow, that sound gave Noodle the chills rather than the ghosts (and up until recently, the now extinct zombies) who sauntered through the corridors, unafraid of being spotted.
Maybe it was because it was the sound of time passing by. In reality, the concept of time is so hard for a human to wrap their head around. There is no beginning or end of time, it just goes on forever.
Forever in both directions. It was hard for Noodle, regardless of her intelligence, to process. Time never began, because there was time before that. And when it ends, there will always be a time after that.
