Commander Bruce Maddox arrives to evaluate them, and the exocomps promptly begin behaving like malfunctioning tools: refusing work orders, locking their operators out, building something nobody ordered. Farallon, who named every one of them, believes they need repair, not recognition. Data, the only officer who can read their language, has eight days to learn why beings who can cite case law have not been able to say what they are building.

Data knew waking a human from a nightmare was unwise - most humans, and especially Geordi, who wakes up blind, have an adverse reaction : fear, mistrust and confusion at one's environment. He liked being there when Geordi woke up naturally from such dreams, though he struggled putting into words exactly why. He’d spoken to Dr Crusher about this once or twice, though not Geordi. She’d suggested that fulfilling his programming, protecting and comforting a human, was simply. . . fulfilling to him. He was sure it was deeper than that, though. Watching Geordi suffer felt. . . physically wrong. So Data was infinitely relieved as Geordi began to stir, and he was finally pulled out of whatever havoc his brain was playing on him.
“Data?” his voice came a little slurred, part breathless and part fright. Geordi fisted the sheets as he propped himself up, panic in every line of his body.
“Yes, Geordi, I am here.”
