And that’s how they end up in the middle of the living room, barefoot and dramatic, standing on either side of their coffee table like it’s a debate stage, one of them wielding a rolled-up architectural schematic like a saber and the other calmly holding a textbook like a shield.
“Let me get one thing clear,” Kaveh says, sweeping an arm toward the bookshelf like a magician revealing his box of tricks. “The rhetorical triangle is relational. Living. It is breathing. You cannot understand persuasion unless you understand people.”
“And yet you fail to persuade anyone into paying your rent,” Alhaitham says, not even looking up from his annotated copy of Rhetoric: A Theory of Civic Discourse.
“That’s ad hominem,” Kaveh says triumphantly, “logical fallacy!”
“It’s also true.”
Kaveh makes a sound like a cat about to attack a mirror. “Okay. Fine. Let’s take an example. Say I’m trying to convince you—hypothetically—to admit that you have feelings.”
Or, Alhaitham and Kaveh debate the rhetorical triangle and accidentally prove they’re in love.
