Chase had known something was wrong from the moment he opened his eyes.
His body felt impossibly heavy, as though his aching limbs had been hollowed out and filled with concrete. Chase didn’t have to look in the mirror to know that his face was flushed. He rolled over and pressed his cheek against the cotton pillowcase, relishing in the faint coolness. An uncomfortable heat prickled his skin while still sending chills down his spine. He rolled onto his back with a groan, staring at the ceiling and wishing the alarm that thrust him into consciousness moments earlier hadn’t gone off at all.

Oh, how House wished he could go back in time! The guilt was weighing him down. He honestly didn’t understand how Chase could even like him after the way he had treated him for years.
Wait a minute! Suddenly, House was petrified, and he felt like he was falling. Was this Stockholm Syndrome??? Was Chase in fact held hostage, and his whole affectionate persona was a survival strategy? House was his boss after all, and an abusive boss at that. And the kid was scared to death to be deported to Australia. Shit, House was spiraling; his face was flushed and he felt nauseous.

There were boxes pushed up against the floorboards, what looked like children’s toys, dolls and stuffed animals and coloring books, all in their original, untouched packaging. There was a little girl kneeling on the bed, fear on her face and pain written in every line of her body.
