Prince Mydei, his annoyingly attractive rival and sparring partner, has more in common with him than he imagined, and it pushes them closer together than ever.
(Aglaea, of course, knows all of this. She suspects, too, what will happen when she sends them on a mission to Aidonia in the dead of winter.

"Tell me this isn't about the prophecy," Mydei demands. "Tell me you're not sleeping with half of Okhema just to forget you're the fucking Deliverer."
Phainon's mouth opens, but no sound comes out. The truth claws up his chest but won't come out: the fact that he needs this, needs to be reduced to something simpler than a title, something smaller than destiny.
Mydei's eyes narrow, and Phainon realizes that he already knows.
Of course he does. He's Mydei.
"It is," Phainon admits at last, voice cracking. “I am.”
Mydei rolls his hips down, his cock dragging alongside Phainon's. The answering groan that spills from Phainon’s throat is nothing like the practiced moans he gives strangers.
"Then you ask me," Mydei growls. "From now on, when you need to forget, you come to me. Not some godsforsaken brothel."

Dottore laughs—one of those small, dark chuckles that makes Pantalone’s hackles raise and sends a thrill through him at the same time. “The rules are simple. You take what I give you, whatever I give you. And you do so with that—” he nods down at the mora Pantalone still clutches, “—in your mouth. An hour on the clock, and if you haven’t dropped it or swallowed it by the end, you win. Simple, yes?”
Pantalone barely keeps his expression neutral. A humiliating hour with Morax’s flesh lying heavy on his tongue, warming to his body while Dottore uses him for whatever carnal pleasures and blood sports he desires. He could slip and swallow it in the worst-case scenario, and then he’d have to beg the man to slice him open and carve out that misplaced, cursed coin.
He’s tempted to say no.
But he doesn't, because the two of them don't do forfeits.

Mitya and Valeriy stay the first night in the theater, before tragedy befalls.
Before that, however, is another discovery.-
Mitya tries not to jitter from excitement, but he sort of shimmies back and forth, chewing on his lip to contain a giggle. Major Valeriy, so stoic he wins awards for it, is a cuddler in bed and smiles about it. Mitya wiggles so much that, apparently, Valeriy notices, sighing and tightening his already burly arm, slotting them so Mitya’s thigh is right between Valeriy’s legs, right up against a warm place.
A warm, hard place.
Valeriy rolls his hips forward. It’s like a gentle wave of the sea that comes back slower than you expect it to, but with more force than before. Astonished, Mitya is at a loss of what to actually do for a few moments as Valeriy’s pleased mouth parts, soft breaths puffing out onto Mitya’s forehead and nose.

A moment later, and Valeriy sets the empty cup down on the table. “But we do have to make something clear, before we begin,” he says, his usual gravity restored. Mitya waves a hand in the air, echoed by the scarf.
“Oh, does the Armory Palace have regulations you have to adhere to when it comes to buggery?” he asks, and grins at the cough Valeriy cannot quite smother.
“Not that I am aware of.” He adjusts his already perfect seated posture, says with easy dignity, “But I do.”
After their two days away from the city in Mitya's dacha, they're back in Snezhnograd. Mitya thinks he knows what he wants next. But then, Valeriy has always been a bit of a dark horse.

It’s almost too loud when he says, sudden, “It’s a pity we didn’t see any bears on the way up here.”
Valeriy stirs from where he is seated, stoic before the heat of the Kresnik. “You wanted to see a bear?”
“I wanted to see how they look compared to you. You’re about the size of a bear.” He folds his arms, tilts his head in a curiosity that’s not quite academic. “Have you ever fought a bear, Sarge?”
He blinks, just once. It does nothing to lighten the heaviness of that purple gaze. “Why would I fight a bear, Mr. Mitya?”
“I don’t know. Practice? Do they make you fight bears in the Fatui for practice?”
“No. They do not.”
He fidgets. The scarf echoes the movement, just to make it all the more awkward. “Oh. Well. I didn’t know that, you see. Because I’m a scientist. Not a soldier.”
Valeriy doesn’t have anything to say to that. He’s just staring at him again. Mitya is really beginning to wish he hadn’t even tried to start a conversation with the man.
After the events of the Korolevskiy Theatre, Mitya decides to retreat to his dacha for some time off.
Of course, Valeriy is assigned to accompany him.
