“Don’t be afraid.”
“How can you even say that to me?” Vash asks, still cringing away from Knives’ touch.
His brother’s skin lacks temperature. Vash runs hot, has missed his natural body heat as the floor, this ship, blood loss, has taken it from him. But his brother has made himself lack heat, or cold, he just is. It feels alien, makes Knives feel dead, or like he is made entirely of bone.
“Everything I’ve done, I’ve done for you. For us. I don’t think that’s anything to fear,” Knives says, still gentle, still looking at Vash like they are family.
“You hurt me,” Vash says, tears burn his eyes. “You’ve hurt me so much.”
“You don’t fear humans.”

Summary
Nicholas is the only one who's seen Vash without his heavy layers of clothes, knowing full-well about the myriad of scars and wounds underneath. Their consequences, he assumes, are mostly in the past-tense as Vash has healed and moved on. But after an aggressive storm approaches after brewing in the distance for days, he's given a sharp reminder that injuries like the ones Vash has sustained rarely fade forever.
Time always seems to digs up old, nasty things to hurt people with, and Vash the Stampede is not one to be spared from the agonies of life.

Vash could feel the eyes on him from behind, could feel them examining every move he made. If he even stumbled once, they'd be on him before he could even blink. He hated it, the knowledge that other people could be worried for him, despite all the wrongs he's committed– how much destruction is caused by his mere presence.
Vash's body was shutting down, he could feel it.
He didn't deserve the luxury.

Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"
