Or: Lloyd died during the Ritual of Unrooting. After leaving Darkley's behind and finding out that he is in a different cycle now he frees the serpentine, meets the ninja and sets things in motion. But of course nothing goes as planned, and he struggles trying to keep it a secret that he has lived a whole entire life before while trying to reconnect to the ninja to become their brother once again.Reading Back to the Roots is adviced.

To calm their growing anxiety they took another sip from their coffee.
A mistake.
"I think those terms suit me", Stratt said after a short but awkward pause, more to herself than to Polaris. But it seemed like she didn't mind them knowing.
It send Polaris into another coughing fit.
They slightly jumped, as they felt Stratt patting on their back but it did help with their coughing.
Polaris turned back to Stratt, a staggered expression written all over their face.

Months after Polaris has been
kidnappedrecruited by the Petroca Task Force, they have a surprising but nice talk with Stratt about coffee, labels and etymology and they both get to know each other better in the meantime.Anxiety and spiraling thoughts are included and free of charge.

Summary
In this universe, instead of Ryland Grace a young college student called Polaris was it who wrote about the thesis of living beings not needing to be water based.
Instead of Ryland Grace they hired the genius Polaris to study the Astrophages.
Instead of Grace they have to send a 26 y/o to space, who had their whole life ahead of them.
Stratt has a hard time breaking the news to Polaris, someone who might as well have been her child.
Polaris has an even harder time hearing those news.
Or
I inserted my oc Polaris in the place of Grace, altered some things, gave them a mother-child relationship with Stratt and threw a medicine ball of angst at them.
Or
The whole sedating scene but instead of Grace my OC Polaris has to suffer through it.

Tommy, more than anything, was lonely.
On the first day of high school, he walked through the double doors of the ugly glass and concrete block in Boyle Heights and knew, with a certainty he'd never had before in his life, that he would hate every second of it.
The other kids didn't like him very much – Piggy Kinard, they sometimes called him – because he was tall and large and always smelled of cigarettes, as if the smoke had stitched itself into the very seams of his clothing.
Tommy would later not remember which teacher had told his parents about the name-calling, would only remember the faint look of disgust on his father's face and the rough hand in the nape of his neck.
