    It had taken him years upon years to learn the lesson – all the important ones always did take Zuko too long to grasp – but he had finally learned to understand when he was unwanted, unneeded. So he left.
    He had thought his destiny was intertwined with the Avatar's and the spirits had laughed at his foolishness. It was up to him to discover his own path, in the end.

    Or: Zuko left after saving Aang and his friends from Combustion Man because he knew he wasn't really wanted and sets off on his own to discover how to help the world recover from a century of war. He did not really intend to become a spirit-figure along the way.
