"I want to make a Horcrux."
Harry's heart skips a beat.
He doesn't know why. He doesn't even know what a Horcrux is. Yet something in Tom's statement sends prickles down his spine, and he knows, without a doubt, that he won't like whatever it is that he's about to hear.
Tom's dark eyes glimmer feverishly at him in the murky green light of the Chamber of Secrets.
"You want to make a what?" Harry asks.
"Look—here…" Tom slips a book into Harry's hands, his fingers trembling where they touch. He flips it open, pages through it—taps a passage of dark ink to indicate where he wants Harry to read. "Once I saw this, I knew this was the key to our future, darling."
Harry can't rip his eyes from the page. His heart thuds in his ears, and his mouth runs dry. Herpo the Foul's invention is anathema to all things sacred, whole, and pure. Murder—soul ripping—what even looks to be minor cannibalism. And Tom wants to do this to himself?
