Summary
There’s very little Andrew likes less than being tricked, but not knowing things does make the cut. He stands, throws his messenger bag over his shoulder, grabs his coffee, and stomps over to slide into the chair across from the guy. He looks up at Andrew with a flash of calculated flight or fight in his eyes, but he quickly smooths this over and affixes a look of polite interest on his face. “Can I help you?”
“Are you on Grindr?” Andrew asks. Bluntly.
“Uh,” the guy says, looking more confused. “I don’t know. What is it?”
“It’s a hookup app gay men use.”
“Oh,” he says, frowning. “No, I’m definitely not on that.”
“Because you don’t do gay men?”
The guy shrugs. “Because I don’t do hookups.”

Summary
On the bus ride back to Palmetto after an exy match, Neil struggles to sleep. Who could blame him? Winning always brings Neil a surge of lingering adrenaline and restless energy. Fortunately for Neil, Andrew knows just the remedy for his excess energy.
As they sit in the darkness, Neil's eyes adjust to Andrew's form; he can make out the man's blonde hair, the shape of his jawline, his shoulders, the exposed skin on Andrew's strong upper arms that slowly turn into a black void covered by his armbands. Neil licks his lips again, watching as Andrew's eyes track the movement.
Andrew is the first to move, resting a heavy hand on Neil's cheek. The man's thumb draws near the corner of Neil's mouth but doesn't dare to venture further, not without Neil's explicit permission to do so.
"Yes or no, Neil?"
Neil's eyes dart from Andrew's face to the front of the bus; he glances from seat to seat. Not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Neil offers back a soft, "Yes."
Or: On the bus ride back to Palmetto, Neil can't sleep, so Andrew takes it upon himself to tire Neil out.

Summary
“We can not live like this, Abram. I cannot live like this.” Neil stops, tilting his head as her whiskers brush his ear. “It is not enough for us to survive just for the sake of being alive. Give us something to live for.”
There is a pause, Wymack’s eyes bounce between man and daemon.
“This will be our end,” he answers finally, his voice hollow despite himself.
She lets out a chuffing sound, the closest thing she has to a laugh.
“Did we ever get a beginning?”

Everyone knows that daemons are a fact of life. Everyone is born with one, a physical manifestation of your soul that appears as an animal. For most, a daemon remains fluid, shifting from form to form throughout their youth until they settle as one thing during puberty.
Neil Josten’s daemon has never settled (and keeps changing into something... dead), and Andrew Minyard doesn't talk to his. As Neil begins his first year at Palmetto, it gets harder and harder to keep his soul in check, to remain the uninteresting Neil Josten. To make matters worse, Andrew and his daemon don’t seem to miss anything.
Something has to give.
This is the kindling.
