COS-D is a benign overgrowth of the claw due to lack of wear. Typical causes are bedrest or long-term hibernation; in Rocky’s case, they spent years without needing to touch the ground to locomote. The overgrowth and wear patterns appear unusual; with patient’s consent, casts of affected claws and samples of overgrown material will be taken for scientific analysis.
