Anya’s grumbling against Luca’s leg, curved contently at his foot, her soft ears flopped down. She makes a particularly loud noise; Luca frowns, his gaze shifting from the zucchini he’s cutting to her. His voice dips into an exasperatedly warm admonish. “Yes, I am single, Anya.” Another light bark from Anya. Luca narrows his eyes, wagging the knife in the air as he points at her, hisses, “I am not blushing!”
Shane and Ilya exchange a dumbfounded look. “Luca,” Shane says slowly, testing the words. Luca startles, his expression trickling into caught red-handed horror. “Are you talking to Anya?”

Summary
There was no “No Son of Mine” lecture, no slurs were ever thrown around, and neither Shane nor Ilya were ever banished from Yuna and David’s house or life. Instead, a quiet questioning began, where all of Shane’s choices were investigated for motive and reason.

When David first walked in on Shane and Ilya kissing, and Shane had to make what felt like a walk of shame to his parents house with Ilya in tow, he assumed that all he had to do was rip the bandaid off. There was no more hiding, there was no pretending this didn’t happen. The truth was out there whether he liked it or not, and he was vocal with Ilya about not liking it at all. But, he told himself, he just had to man up. He could do this. Rip the bandaid off, tell the truth, and tomorrow will be better.
He was really incredibly wrong about that.

Summary
The first bruise doesn’t mean anything. Neither does the second, really.
Shane is a hockey player. He’s tired because the season’s just ended, he’s aching because he’s spent the better half of it getting slammed into boards and putting up with Ilya’s suicide drills, and his fever is probably just a summer cold he’s picked up from one of teammates kids along the way.
At least, that’s what they tell themselves.
or: Ilya starts to think that there might actually be something wrong with his husband.
