Rhaenyra turned, polite smile already on her lips, and froze. The woman in front of her was studying the painting with a critical eye, but Rhaenyra could only stare at her in stunned amazement. This woman had just arrived. There was no way Rhaenyra would not have noticed someone so beautiful.

At that very moment, Alicent glanced up and caught sight of Mysaria above. For a breath, they looked straight at one another, the moment stretched out over the hallowed proceedings in the hall. She knew she ought to have looked away at once, and so remained beneath the cold Queen’s notice, but she did not – could not – and in the end, it was Alicent who broke away first, turning her eye back to Rhaenyra upon the Iron Throne.
