Summary
Your lives and jobs offered no security for the people who waited for you at home. It was dangerous and complicated and there was a reason many people kept people at arms length – because you could never promise to come home.
Things went wrong and people died, it was easier if there was no one on the other side who would have to deal with that.
Happy endings were rare. Normal life was rare. There was never going to be a picket fence, and kids running around, and the ability to retire. If you were lucky enough to make it to ‘retirement’, even then you wouldn’t be allowed to leave. Not really.
So maybe your life wouldn’t be normal, but you have man who loved you. It took a while to get there, but there he was, knelt before you with a beautiful ring and stumbling words, asking for a piece of normal you could give.
