He sucked in a breath as he approached Grace’s headstone, seeing someone who could only be described as the ghost of Dr. Grace sitting in front of it with his head in his hands. Whispering something under his breath.
Against his better judgment, he called out. “Grace?”

Carl goes to visit the grave of an old friend. The last thing he expects to see is Grace's ghost sitting in front of his own grave.

“You can't be serious?” Carl asks.
“I don't do jokes. And someone has to keep an eye on him.”
He groans and runs a hand over his face.
“But why me?” It won't only be him, he knows. He'll have his team with him, a few trusted agents who he has worked with for years (and who are currently sneakily accepting chocolate covered peanuts from the teacher.)
But this still feels like a personal blow somehow. Did he do something wrong? Is this what he has been reduced to? A glorified babysitter for a scatterbrained teacher?
There is that half smirk on her face, the one that either enamors you or makes you shit your pants, depending on whether or not you are on her good side.
“You told him your name.” Her answer throws him and she can tell. He opens his mouth but she carries on. “Your real name.”

Carl is less than thrilled when he gets reassigned to babysit a teacher playing around with three dots in a glorified warehouse.
But at least this job should be rather uneventful.Boring even.

“I'm trying to remember who was in there.” Grace sounds distracted again, thoughts miles away. “I’m trying to remember the experiments that were scheduled. I think… I think…” He sobs and slaps a hand over his mouth as if the noise has snuck up on him. “I think Shapiro and Dubois… I think they wanted to… but I can’t remember if that was today. I can’t remember, Carl!”
A shiver runs down Carl’s spine and it feels like the ground is falling out from under him. His vision is swimming with black spots for a second but he blinks them back by sheer force of will.
This can’t be happening. He refuses to believe that this is happening. Because if Shapiro and Dubois were in that building that means…

Some might argue that Carl knew from the moment they all gathered in that conference room what would be asked of Dr. Grace and that it wasn’t really a choice at all.
I think he knew much, much longer than that.
