    “What’s there to talk about?!” Hollander scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re playing for my fucking team!”

    “I know.”

    “Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”

    “Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”

    Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”

    “Right.”

    “And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

    OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. He's lonely, and angry, and he misses Boston. He doesn't know if it helps that Hollander is there or not.

    An extremely Ilya focussed work - it dissects not only his relationship with Shane, but his relationship to love and self-worth in the process. It looks at his relationships with his family - containing very nuanced takes on both Alexei and Irina that add more depth to them as people.
    It also looks at Ilya’s perspective on Hockey; his concept of a team; his hope, love and disappointment in Russia; and his relation to his own queerness and how it fits into this.

    Extremely good work for exploring Ilya as a character outside of just his love for Shane (without diminishing that aspect of him).

    It gets rough (emotionally) in the middle there, though, my god. Shane, we get your perspective about three times - and it’s devastating - but please make better decisions, oh my lord.

    Happy ending, though, it gets resolved and things work out.

    JJ didn't think the others saw it. Hayden, maybe, but Jackie was the only WAGs's name Shane had committed to memory so Hayden never brought it up. JJ didn't have a wife or girlfriend. He had his hookups and the names of the best restaurants in each city they player in. If JJ had a dog, Shane would probably mix its name up with Drapeau's. The others didn't get that however pathetic or sad they might think Shane, Shane thought the same of them tenfold when they missed shots at practice or ate fast food on weekdays. Shane wasn't being prissy or funny when he said, don't embarass me—JJ still doesn't know exactly what it was, but he doesn't care to find out.

    Shane had poured everything into his team (possessively: it was his team) and he asked them to give it back that day, so they delivered. When Shane smiled at them afterwards, it felt like love.

    Heated Rivalry zombie apocalypse.
    Set after the 2017 All Stars (After Rose) but before Scott Hunter’s kiss, Shane and Ilya miss the world literally ending because they were too deep in incredible situationship sex.

    After getting stranded in a very infected Boston because they were fucking through all the evacuation calls, Shane and Ilya take a road trip up to the Canadian boarder, because even zombies aren’t getting in the way of the cottage.

    There’s nothing like almost dying multiple times (and a brief fake marriage) with your fuck-buddy to get you both to admit that maybe your decade-long situationship is not as casual as you’ve been pretending it was. Maybe.

    A plane crash on the way to the Sochi Olympics. This is a pretty realistic and, honestly, stress inducing story. Shane takes control of the remaining group as the only guy with any idea of wilderness survival, Ilya working as second in command to keep moral up and make sure nothing falls apart. The only guy who has any medical training speaks purely Russian, so Ilya’s also translating all of that and both of them have to assist in some pretty gruesome medical procedures with limited supplies.

    It’s not dark, but it’s certainly not lighthearted.
