    Shane becomes aware that he’s dating sim character and has an extremely valid existential crash-out at what that means for free will and determinism.

    My man is going through it - the universe really said ‘oh, you have some internalised homophobia? A bit of repression? How about you get the ability to see the hand of god, and even in a gay dating sim, god says you in particular are straight. And also actively controls and compels you to comply. That’ll fix you.’

    It does not, in fact, fix him. Gay dating sim god seems to legitimately hate and actively sabotage every actual queer character here, actually. Because fuck you, I guess.

    Shane has a lot of anxiety about the future of their relationship and their ability to be affectionate in public in pre-Hunter 2017. Ilya decides to solve this by using is mythic-level gaydar to create the queer hokey Bratva.
    What ensues is five years of scheming, very legally dubious decisions and a complete hockey insurrection.

    “Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”

    “Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”

    Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”

    “Right.”

    “And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

    OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. He's lonely, and angry, and he misses Boston. He doesn't know if it helps that Hollander is there or not.

    An extremely Ilya focussed work - it dissects not only his relationship with Shane, but his relationship to love and self-worth in the process. It looks at his relationships with his family - containing very nuanced takes on both Alexei and Irina that add more depth to them as people.
    It also looks at Ilya’s perspective on Hockey; his concept of a team; his hope, love and disappointment in Russia; and his relation to his own queerness and how it fits into this.

    Extremely good work for exploring Ilya as a character outside of just his love for Shane (without diminishing that aspect of him).

    It gets rough (emotionally) in the middle there, though, my god. Shane, we get your perspective about three times - and it’s devastating - but please make better decisions, oh my lord.

    Happy ending, though, it gets resolved and things work out.

    JJ didn't think the others saw it. Hayden, maybe, but Jackie was the only WAGs's name Shane had committed to memory so Hayden never brought it up. JJ didn't have a wife or girlfriend. He had his hookups and the names of the best restaurants in each city they player in. If JJ had a dog, Shane would probably mix its name up with Drapeau's. The others didn't get that however pathetic or sad they might think Shane, Shane thought the same of them tenfold when they missed shots at practice or ate fast food on weekdays. Shane wasn't being prissy or funny when he said, don't embarass me—JJ still doesn't know exactly what it was, but he doesn't care to find out.

    Shane had poured everything into his team (possessively: it was his team) and he asked them to give it back that day, so they delivered. When Shane smiled at them afterwards, it felt like love.
