Summary
Audrey glanced over from her seat on the sofa, seeking a place for her restless thoughts to escape. Her eyes fell on the photograph of Evelyn. She’d dusted it countless times over the years. Always smiling fondly at the beautiful woman she knew she’d have adored.
Tonight, with the Herriots up at Heston with Jenny and Richard, Tris out with his Charlotte, and Siegfried treating Dorothy to a night at the Renniston, there was only Audrey, Jess, and Dash. And that smiling face of a woman gone much too soon.
“You’d be happy for him, wouldn’t you? That he’s finally opened his heart again?” Audrey whispered, letting the tears she felt welling up slip into her voice. Evelyn had loved and lost him, too, after all. Only Evelyn had been brave enough to tell him first. Had had a life with him and not the fantasy of one.
“I would if I thought he was doing it for the right reasons,” came a refined, light voice.
