"I'm not built for this, man,” she says, choking. “I’m not built for good things. I’m supposed to live on the edge of starvation forever and then die pissed off that I never got more. I was ready to do that. Hell, I’m good at living that way. How the fuck am I supposed to live like this?” She gestures around the street, where the luxury stores are just starting to close and the four-star restaurants are setting up their patios.
“I'm not good at having enough, at things being okay. I’m not good at it. I kind of want to - ”
She stops short. His hand has wrapped around one of her own, and she’s shocked at how warm his grasp is against the coldness of her own. She stares at their entwined hands, the torrent of words suddenly gone.
“Can we stop for a second?” he asks lowly, looking down at her. Biting her lips and nodding, she’s thrown back to the night - only a week ago, could it be possible? - when they smoked all those cigarettes over the bridge.

She doesn’t seem like she expects anything, just that she likes hanging out with them, and it feels right. Having Hailey here through dinner is good, it feels like a puzzle piece he doesn’t remember losing being found and clicking perfectly into place. Whatever happens here, he wants to keep this safe person for Charlotte. She deserves it.
Maybe he doesn’t need to thank this person for loving his daughter. Maybe it’s easy. He’s not sure. But it’s comfortable, and he likes whatever’s going on here.(or: the single dad!Jay canon compliant au!)
