“There's no way forward,” Merlin says thickly, blinking back tears. “She's locked us out, there's… there's no other way.”
Arthur finds himself taken back; Merlin, for all his expressiveness, rarely ever cries. “Okay,” he says hesitantly, resting a gloved hand on Merlin's back. “It's okay, Merlin. We'll… we'll find a way out. And the knights know where we are, if we don't get out, they'll find us.”
Merlin shakes his head, wiping the moisture on his face away with his sleeve. “No. No, uh… that wouldn't…” Queen Beira wouldn't be tricked so easily. Doubtlessly, it would just end up with the knights stuck with them. Merlin finally lifts his face, looking red-faced and miserable. “I’m sorry.” For more than Arthur knew, for everything that Arthur was soon to know.
Circumstances force Merlin to use his magic in front of Arthur; Arthur doesn't take it well, though not quite for the reasons Merlin expected. Merlin must now try to win Arthur back, and in the process, he learns he was never as alone as he feared he was.
