Hermione stared, then remembered. Of course. The woman had probably never seen one.
"It's a pen."
"I heard the word." Walburga leaned forward slightly, suspiciously radiating from every inch of her. "What does it do?"
Hermione looked at the pen, then back at Walburga. The question was so unexpected she almost laughed.
"You can write with it."
The portrait's eyes narrowed. "Without ink?"
"It does have ink."
"Where?"
Hermione clicked it and the tip emerged. Walburga flinched, but Hermione pretended not to notice. "Inside."
The portrait looked scandalized. "Inside."
"Yes."
"That's ridiculous. It must be a trap.”
"It works."
"How?"
Instead of answering immediately, Hermione opened her notebook. "Here. I'll show you.”
Walburga watched suspiciously as Hermione lowered the pen to the page.
In neat handwriting, she wrote:
'Hello Walburga :)'
Walburga just stared at her.
