Summary
Celine never got the chance to keep custody of Rumi after the tragedy that befell The Sunlight Sisters. Instead, custody was given to their mentor, Ji-hye, and the matter was considered settled until 14 years later, when Celine received a call from a desperate social worker asking if she was still interested in being Rumi's legal guardian.
"Rumi’s name left Celine’s mouth in a desperate gasp without her consent. She faintly felt her lawyer grab her shoulder, keeping her in place as Rumi was carried out of the courtroom, her little hands reaching for Celine as the toddler cried. Ji-hye’s parting words to her while she sat handcuffed in the holding cell two nights ago rang in Celine’s ears as she felt the final piece of her soul descend, the promise she made to Mi-yeong shattering.
“You’ll never be a part of that demon’s life as long as I draw breath. It’s for the good of the Honmoon, Celine, for your own good. Our faults and fears must never be seen.”

Her head is swimming. Falling and rising in equal measure. Tumbling down into the endless abyss and somehow simultaneously soaring higher than it ever has. Her pulse is a drumroll, thrumming thorugh her blood, through her bones, her nerves, her synapses, her very soul. She's never felt so alive, and yet somehow also so pliant.
Above her, Mira's eyes are wide. Pupils blown out like twin black holes, eclipsing the irises almost entirely.

"Yeah," Zoey breathes, somewhere behind her. Rumi can't see her, but feels the weight of her against her spine. "Fuck indeed."
