A mere week away from reaching Erid, Simon overhears an argument between Grace and Rocky, one concerning a secret that Grace apparently should have told Simon long ago. Whatever it is that Grace and Rocky aren't telling him, it's a liability, and if they won't tell him themselves, he'll figure it out on his own. Unfortunately for Simon, this causes problems.
If Simon thought his encounters with monsters had ended when he escaped the blood ocean, he was very wrong.

Okay, okay. Speak, so the ship was probably communicating somehow. But the Aliens didn’t have the same kinds of communication devices as humans. And Communicator was something that they used to refer to the radio communication that Simon had introduced to them.
“They are radioing us?” He asked “Are they threatening us?!”
“Yes speak. No Danger.”
Simon calmed a little, letting his hand unclench from where it was fisted against the wall. Adrian was keening now. It was haunting. Filled with unmistakable grief.
“Who is it?” Simon asked, wishing Adrian was the one talking. It’d be faster.
“Adrian. Mate.”

Like he had been screaming. “Some guys I cut a bad deal with, like, years ago finally caught up to me. Romanian mob. They got the drop on us.” He pauses, swallowing hard. When he next speaks, he’s even quieter, voice simmering with anger. “They put us in cages, Bobert. They put a fucking muzzle on me. Like a dog. I don’t even know what they did to Waterboy, he’s still unconscious.”

The arrival at Erid is a momentous occasion. Rocky is excited and thrilled. Ryland is overwhelmed. But the reunion is happy, beautiful, amazing.
Or that's what it should have been. Except Rocky gets hurt, Ryland is left to try and communicate with an alien planet, and everyone is scrambling to figure out how to do this. To Grace, this is incredible but also bittersweet - he got Rocky home safely with the taumoeba, now he just gets... to starve. To Erid, this is insane - how did Rocky show up in an alien spaceship with a child???

No matter what Grace tries to tell him, Simon is very sure that the man is divine in nature. It just makes sense.

Simon winds up in The Enclosure, naturally. Grace is super down to have human company on planet Erid, but he really wishes someone would have given him a little bit of warning first. Especially about Simon’s religious cult upbringing — if he had known about that, he maybe could have planned a better-worded greeting that wasn’t basically, “Be Not Afraid.” He really set them up for failure with that one.
