The kid’s on fire. The heat that meets Robby’s hands is furious and intense, indicating a fever that definitely wasn’t there before this trauma began. The way Whitaker immediately sags into the hold, immediately collapsing against Robby like he’s unable to keep himself upright as soon as hands are laid upon him, is only the nail in the coffin.
Dead patient still on the table. Deeply stressful situation after an entire shift’s worth of deeply stressful situations, compounding again and again and again. A damp heat to his forehead when Robby’s palm slips under his bangs, and a new, sweet tang to the air, already strong enough to push past the scent blockers he knows the kid is religious about wearing.
Whitaker presses his face harder to Robby’s hand like he’s trying to hide in it.
Shit. Robby knows what this is.

Summary
Robby raised his head and gaped at the reflection starring back at him. He recognised some of the features but only if he focussed on certain aspects at a time. The ever -present crease between his brows, the rivers of crow feet running down his cheeks, the shape of his nose and the bemused glare from his brown eyes. The shape of his ears, the disarray of his brown hair now slightly thinner than it had been and streaked with grey that had once been perfectly matched by his beard.
The beard that he had just shaved off.
