Summary
People kept walking out on Matt until Matt decided to walk out on them first. Not the most sophisticated strategy, but it worked. It worked for years, from middle-school all the way to undergrad.
And then, Matt walked right into the life of one Foggy Nelson.
It‘s one of those 'unstoppable force meets unmovable object' situations, except in their case, it‘s 'What happens when someone who is incapable of loving people meets someone who is impossible not to love?'

"You’re so...Ned, why do you never talk about how funny you can be? Or how smart, how you can keep up with everybody else’s specialties with a little work, even when we don’t understand computers? Or how you just get people and that makes them love you?”
Unsure how to respond, Ned looked at his feet. “I guess I just figure that everyone else sees it, so I should be sure to see it too.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that.” Peter walked closer, putting a hand on Ned’s arm. “But maybe don’t treat it like this disadvantage to you. It’s not. There’s no downside to you, Ned.”
For some reason, the warm touch of Peter’s hand on his bare skin combined with his words brought tears to Ned’s eyes. He blinked them away. “Thank you, Peter. That means a lot, coming from you.”
The ‘coming from you’ slipped out of its own accord, but Peter didn’t notice or didn’t comment because he just slid his fingers down to squeeze Ned’s wrist. Ned’s breath caught, and he tried not to let on that he was dizzy with the overwhelming combination of touch, kind words, and the stupid sweet smile on Peter’s fucking face.

"I love you," Ned promised, taking Peter's hand. "I just don't know if I'm ready for you to see me."
Peter's brow furrowed.
Ned looked down and searched for how to say it, how to explain why he couldn't let Peter take off his clothes. Where Peter was anatomical perfection, Ned was...not. Perfection, that is. His rolls, his lack of pecs, his flabby underarms and his heavy stomach were just the beginning of his dissatisfying body. How was Peter supposed to see him naked and still want to have sex with him? How was Peter supposed to deal with all the moving parts of Ned's body when his was the ideal mix of quivering muscles and smooth skin?
