Summary
The soulmate string is a purely human trait; even if two connected humans have no similarities, no possible contact with each other up until their first meeting, they could have one. Sometimes the strings change colors as a relationship evolves, a phenomena that was extremely hard to track. They can't be replicated. There's no way to artificially duplicate a string or change its color. Nobody has been able to figure out if they're even made of anything other than light. And to round it all off, the only people that can see the strings are you and whoever you're connected to.
This is especially bad for Ryland, who has two clear strings shooting straight up into the sky.

Whitaker's eyes blew wide.
Robby looked disappointed. "Whitaker, I am a physician of over 20 years, if you think you can hide an injury from me and continue to work you are gravely mistaken I am afraid."
Dennis went to protest, opening his mouth… but nothing came out of it. He shut it, then reopened it and tried again. But Robby just tilted his head, giving him a look.
"I can get someone else if you are more comfortable… but I can't have a resident working through pain and potentially making an injury worse."
He had been doing a good job so far keeping his two lives separate. No one knew about his fights, his injuries.
Except for Robby, who seemed to be the only one to see right through him. To pry in the right places without even knowing what he was digging for.
ORDennis is known to the hospital as Dr. Whitaker. But to the streets, he is known as Whiplash. He spends his Friday nights in abandoned warehouses, boxing with sketchy mentors and taking cash home in envelopes.
What will break him first? His religious trauma, his double life, or love?

He opened the door just to see a young man, he has never seen before, stand on his front porch, clutching his backpack on his shoulder. "Can I help you?" Dennis asked hesitantly, looking the guy up and down. The young man was dressed way fancier than he normally seen people dressed in his town, everything clean and new looking, probably not from around here. "Are you Dr. Whitaker?"
