Things had shifted, slow and seismic and permanently between them. They were the center of each other’s worlds, but ‘friends’ no longer felt adequate, or even accurate sometimes.
Some things stayed simple, though. Riku craved Sora like sunlight, like air, and from his first year of high school onward, he was only ever at peace for those brief instants when Sora was his completely. Pinned in the gritty dirt at the end of an after-school spar, with Kairi suddenly invisible to them both. Walking the long way home together from her father’s house, their world of three shrunk down to two. The tension dropped out of his shoulders, and there he was again, the boy Kairi had known for so long. Turned away from her. Smiling.
And it’s not as if his obsession was unrequited. Sora thought Riku was the coolest person alive, and to a boy of twelve, thirteen, fourteen, there was never any competing with that.

Summary
Sora is halfway out of his chair, clutching his chest with a pained grimace.
"Sora?"
Sora rips his hand way from his chest and straightens, putting on a smile. "What is it, Riku?"
"Are you okay?" Riku asks.
Sora's smile widens into a grin, "Of course! Now come on, those cookies are calling our names!" and Sora runs out of the room in much the same fashion as Ventus did. Riku feels his heart sink— something is wrong with Sora, and he refuses to admit it.
