Hacked clients come in two forms.
There’s the safer version, an exosuit that only interfaces with a player’s code but, ultimately, is only somewhat effective.
And there’s the less safe version. A microchip, implanted into the back of the neck, which changes the code of a player entirely.
It’s just a bit better.

“Hm.”
“Is it a trap?? Oh gosh it is, isn’t it?” Usopp stood on his tiptoes to try and see the contents.
“No, no. It’s…” Brook lifted an envelope from the top of the pile. It was gold with big letters printed on the front. “Fan mail.”
Or: Brook starts receiving fan mail. Surprisingly, this affects more than just him.

Summary
It's not the first time they've been becalmed, but it's the first due to a field of ice for as far as the eye can see. Excluding, of course, the snow and ice covered island a few leagues ahead of them. With the speed of Sanji's skywalking and his responsibility to keep the crew fed, it's only reasonable that he should be the one to go to the island to restock supplies.
Or: They sail in strange waters and encounter strange things. Sanji should have known better.
