The idea of one of his parents laying hands on him simply because he wanted to fucking talk made him nauseous in a way he had never thought possible. But his commanding officers made up for it, laying their own rough, calloused hands and words on him– scarring him both physically and emotionally. He was a quick learner, with a remarkable sense of self preservation. He wasn’t going to let something he knew he should have fixed on his own get in the way of him doing what was right, fighting for what was right– even if deep down he knew the injustices he faced from his peers and leaders wasn’t.
After that, it didn’t take long for him to decide to be better. To prove everyone wrong.

Still, he's not so arrogant he doesn't know when it's time to call for help, so when his team hits a brick wall with a ticking clock, he reaches out to the Intelligence Control and Analysis Program. ICAP sends him a mountain of files, all of them good candidates, but Hotch is repeatedly drawn to the same file. Genius #2036334-4383 has three doctorates and a high success rate with the Bureau, though he's never been in the field. According to his file, he has behavioral issues and doesn't play well with others, but Hotch doesn't see that being a problem. It's a temporary arrangement, after all.
