Kim calls Harry when he’s drinking.
Most of the time, you call him sober, late at night after looking over your case notes out on your balcony, smoking a cigarette and staring down into the dark courtyard. “Kim,” he’ll say, voice deep in your ear. Often, the radio in the background of his apartment, always playing something different, as he rediscovers his tapes. Disco and rock and jazz and, once - which you ask him to turn down - Iilmaran throat-singing. Or, you will call him when you listen to WEATHER FM at night and find the weather will be bad the following day. You tell him, on these calls, that you will pick him up in the morning. Often, when you do, you find he has gone down to the corner kiosk and picked you up a newspaper, or gotten the two of you pastries, and he will be drenched, which defeats the purpose of picking him up. You tell him this, and he just winks at you.

Summary
Kim realizes Harry’s afraid of touching and being touched. So Kim starts, very slowly, enacting his plan to make the detective more comfortable with being touched. He starts small. A hand on Harry’s shoulder when he’s done well, or when he needs to be bolstered. He leans into him to whisper confidentially into his ear. Once, the detective has mustard on his shirt, and Kim wets his handkerchief and dabs at it while the man stiffens and his face goes scarlet. He allows his hand to brush Harry’s when they play Suzerainty, handing off the die. But Harry doesn’t touch Kim. No, the detective keeps his hands to himself.
And then in May Harry touches him of his own volition.

SAVOIR FAIRE: You have to get up. You can’t let him see you like this.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: You struggle to get up, using the coffee table as leverage. When you reach eye level with it, you see the tabletop is strewn with a veritable crime scene of empty bottles and glasses, crushed beer cans, a tin of still-open pyrholidon. Scattered tapes, postcards from Mirova. An overflowing ashtray like the aftermath of some mini house fire. A heap of playing cards.
PERCEPTION: The radio still on. SAD FM, sad even at eleven in the morning.
