“Yone,” the extremely beautiful woman says, a small but sincere smile on her glossy lip that catches the artificial light from the ceiling spots as Kayn leans across the table.
“Kayn,” she says, hoping desperately that she comes across as steady and nonchalant. To her surprise, Yone’s hand isn’t as soft as it looks when she wraps her slender fingers around Kayn’s.
“I know,” she says. She doesn’t elaborate.Or: Six months after a hookup, up-and-coming rockstars Yone and Kayn are asked to collaborate on a performance for a music show.

She hears Kayn’s voice but none of the words make sense to her. The fire licks at her bones and her organs and she burns and burns but somehow, she’s still not ashes and Kayn is still here, looking at her. Looking right through her pretty red sundress. He sees all the things she’s been hiding her whole life, all her secrets spilling out of her bleeding heart and onto her carpeted bedroom floor.

There are times that it's really driven home to Kayn just how fucked in the head he probably is – and not just the kind of fucked in the head you have to be to willingly bond with and then devour a demon's soul for power. Or the kind of fucked you have to be to go through the rite of shadow and dedicate your life to righteous manslaughter.
No, it's probably a little weirder than that, if he's going to be honest with himself.
Because he just watched this guy carve an armored platoon to pieces like they were made of tissue paper, practically dripping with carnage and burning with the kind of power that comes with fanaticism, and he's never been more turned on in his life.

“Seriously?” he inquires, sarcasm dripping. The look he gives Kayn is sly, smile crooked and toothy. “You underestimate me, Mr. Mysterious Assassin. For I’m the world’s greatest explorer, and I could probably find you even at the ends of the earth.”
