When Gwayne's nephew is brought to ward in Oldtown, he feels a great deal of kinship for a boy who was torn from all the family he has ever known. In spite of not being named one of the prince's official guardians, Gwayne becomes his nephew's protector whilst begrudgingly allowing his cousin a place in the young prince's life as they learn how to navigate the other's approaches to parenting, and have a fair few arguments along the way.

A slight au in which Gwayne and Daeron travel to King's Landing before Viserys' death so that Daeron can meet his father. Instead of a fond family reunion, Gwayne has to shield Daeron from the eccentricities of his immediate family members whilst being utterly fed up of said family members and just wanting his boy to be happy.

Whilst at Harrenhal, Gwayne receives the news that not only has King's Landing fallen to Rhaenyra, his father is dead and his beloved nephew has been taken hostage. He abandons Ser Criston's company with one mission in mind, to save Daeron, or die trying.

Daemon actually notices that the bleach blond Daeron is not the real one and manages to take real Daeron hostage back to King's Landing, Daeron's other uncle is very much not happy about this.

But from Rhaenyra’s dungeons, the greatest prayer of all, from a man who is set to be executed himself on the morrow: he’s a boy. Just a boy, who has suffered enough, and you can kill me if you’d like, but if you have any mercy in your heart, Your Grace- give him a chance to live.
