Summary
In the centuries after Landfall and before Recontact, human society on planet Cottman IV Darkover was ruled by a loose coalition of often warring states, known as the Hundred Kingdoms, later consolidated into Seven Domains. But the most powerful people were the laran circles of the Towers, where telepathy and other forms of 'magic' combined with a form of matter-to-energy conversion to devise a new science of matrix mechanics.
In the early centuries it was not uncommon for Towers also to compete among themselves, and one to destroy another. In that case the vanquished might join forces with the victors, or become fugitives. This is the story of one such fugitive, and the welcome he found in the lands whereto he fled. It may or may not be historically 'true' on Darkover; but it is, we believe, typical, and representative of those days…
