Henry rolled his eyes inwardly. Typical American, no class to speak of. He wasn’t missing anything then by thoroughly and purposefully distancing himself. He, at least, had enough class and enough etiquette drilled into him to keep his expression neutral as he took his hand and said:
“That’s quite alright, Alex. It’s nice to meet you.”
At least, that’s what he meant to say.

Asher was terrified. But that was ordinary, and the emotion was easily pushed to the back of his mind. Probably he was in trouble. Maybe he had even done something to deserve it — that would explain the guilt, that panicky, squirmy feeling running up his spine. He was already hurt, too, which always seemed to mean more was to come. Not that it made any difference.
There was no point worrying, sobbing and trying to get away and begging like a stupid baby or a feral from the woods. It never did any good, just made the beating worse. No, Asher was a good pup, he was obedient: he kept his head down and his voice to a whisper; and when he was thinking of doing something really stupid, like taking his siblings and running as far as he could, he made sure before he did it that there was absolutely no chance they'd get caught.
Two old soldiers find a hurt runaway on their land, concussed, confused, and terrified for his siblings. They hatch a plan to rescue the others, and begin to build an odd kind of pack, all while badly out of their depth.
