“Thirteen years, once a month, every month, for the next thirteen years of your life. You’ll be delivering about two thousand years in total,” he said. “Then whatever else you take is yours to keep.”

“You shouldn’t be here.” Angel rubs his brow, as if, despite his disdain for thinking, he has been indulging in the activity long enough to produce a wicked headache. “Humans aren’t supposed to go to Hell.”
“Not good ones.”
“Are you saying you aren’t good?”
Aki stopped worrying about being good when he made his life about killing the Gun Devil. What did being good matter, when everything led towards a grand and terrible revenge?
“Come on, Hayakawa.” Angel gives him a flat, impatient stare. “Don’t give me the moralistic hand-wringing, we both know you were destined for the other place. Ending up here was an accident, nothing more.”
“What does that have to do with you…” Aki prays he isn’t blushing. He’s a corpse, so by all rights he should not be blushing. Blushing despite lacking a heartbeat would be an evil sort of irony, but then again, this is Hell, so all bets are off.

After their death at the hands of the Gun Devil, Aki and Angel meet again on the winding roads of Hell.

Aki doesn’t seem to find pleasure in smoking. Doesn’t seem to be an addict waiting for his next hit. Out there on the balcony, the faint glow of the cigarette illuminating his fingertips, he instead looks like a man in atonement. For what, Angel isn’t sure. Aki has always been what most humans would call a good man.
Angel steps outside. Aki glances at him.
“You always look so miserable out here,” Angel says.
“Do I?” Aki’s voice is soft, like speaking too loud would interrupt the low drone of insects singing under the stars.
Angel shrugs. “More than you normally do, anyway.”
Aki exhales through his nose like a muted laugh. “Didn’t realize you paid that close of attention.”
“I don’t.” A lie.
Aki stares at him for a moment. Takes a slow drag. “I’m not miserable,” he says quietly. “I just…” he trails off.
Angel waits. The insects sing. Aki sighs.
“Do you ever think that maybe you’re just… not meant for the things you want?”--------
In the months leading up to Aki's death, the Angel Devil unexpectedly moves into his apartment.
