    2009 was meant to be Shane’s year, but, well…whatever. 2010 was going to be his year, instead. He was going to be drafted first, he was going to prove everyone who doubted his ability to come back wrong, and he was going to begin the most storied and awarded-laden career in NHL history. 2010 was going to be his year.

    At least, it was supposed to be, if only Minnesota would teach their defensemen how to not trip onto the Detroit goalie and end his career. If only Detroit didn’t have the first overall pick. They had to pick a goalie. Shane understood. It was for the best, really. Really, really.
    Because the Boston Bears had the second pick, and the Boston Bears had Ilya Rozanov, and Ilya Rozanov was currently the best professional hockey player in the world. He would make a fantastic left-winger for Shane. Because Rozanov was only the best professional player in the world for about the next four minutes.

    OR: A short stint of cancer makes Shane miss the 2009 draft, and he's picked by the Bears in 2010. He and Rozy become fast friends, which is a great cover for their affair.

    Shane gasped and stumbled backwards. “Three weeks? You decided-” his hands flew to his mouth. “How could you do this without talking to me? This is what? To punish me because I won’t come out on your timeline?”

    Ilya felt a stab of anger. “You won’t come out on any timeline!”

    Shane blinked at him. “I literally drove here tonight because I wanted to know if you would accept six to twelve months!” 

    “A timeline,” he barked. “This is our lives, Shane. I want to be with you fully now. I know you are scared, but you need to be brave, and I am so deeply fucking unhappy being your dirty little secret.”

    “That’s not fair Ilya, it’s going to be complicated for me. I’m already the only Asian captain in the league! The media, sponsors, the Voyageurs? It’s going to need to be carefully managed-”

    After the Boxing Day fight, Ilya makes an impulsive decision and agrees to a trade to Vancouver, while Shane stays in Montreal and nurses his broken heart. But an ending isn't always an ending, and the spectre of their love burns far too brightly to go down easy. A tale of love, heartache, redemption, and forging the happiness you deserve for yourself.

    In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in Room 1410, Ilya slips out unnoticed, and they spend the next seven years trapped in the situationship from hell we all know and love.

    In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in just as Ilya goes to leave and—through the combined power of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and a frankly alarming lack of follow-up—Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010.

    Given the chance to grow up with rather than against each other, Shane and Ilya build a life thats steadier, safer, and far less frightening than their canon. Their rivalry fizzles before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced by hockey’s most beloved “bromance", and in 2015, they find the courage to do the one thing their canon counterparts never got to do: tell the NHL and the world.

    There is just one problem: No one believes them.

     

    OR: Despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s indignation.
