Icy dread and hot anger coalesce into a hard ball in Ilya’s chest. “What curse?”
Shane tosses his head, runs a hand through his hair. He looks out the window, because whatever is going on with him is clearly too agonizing to experience while looking directly at Ilya’s face. He crosses his arms over his chest, lurches a single step towards Ilya like he’s attached to a string pulled taut.
“Remember rookie season,” Shane says, apropos of nothing.
Ilya cuts a sharp, humorless grin. “Most of it.”
“They put you on Curse Protocol. You said it was a hazing thing. And I told you, do you remember, that I’d heard of guys—”
“Getting their dicks cursed off,” Ilya says.
“Yeah,” Shane says, eyes refusing to settle. He looks fucking hunted, like he expects to be brutally struck down in the very near future. “Well.”Shane Hollander is not the first hockey player to be the victim of a nasty playoff curse, but this one is a little different. Ilya rises to the occasion in a couple of ways.

"Mm." One final touch, brushing imaginary lint off Shane's shoulder. It takes enormous effort to step back and circle back around to Shane's front. Now he's between Shane and the door, and Shane's eyes are following, hungry. "Not everything, I think."

He's so fucking stupid.
Even now, as he tries to figure out what to say, words pool on his tongue, ones that he knows he won't actually be able to voice. The familiar, flat-toned voice from the monthly DOMU videos rings through his ear, perfectly neutral as his brain reminds him that the longer time arcana has to work in the body, the less of a chance you have resisting it.
OR: The Might of Montreal lingers in the gaps as Shane struggles to come to terms with everything he's discovered.

Ilya can live with Hollander hurting, as long as Ilya is the one who hurt him. Hollander will feel survivor’s guilt, obviously. He’ll go to the media crying and tell them how brave Ilya was. Their names are going to be linked together forever, and there is nothing Hollander can do about it, and Ilya will not experience any consequences.
Sometimes women tell him that his asshole cover is just a front for insecurity, but it’s okay, because he can put his walls down just for them. These women are wrong. Ilya is just an asshole. Nobody but God can judge him, and He’ll have the opportunity soon.

What if instead of Montreal, their game during episode 4 was in Boston. And instead of having a terrible time at the club, Shane, Ilya, and a bunch of their respective teammates (and the dentist, the referee and the EBUG) have an even worse time barricaded in the dressing room trying to survive a zombie attack. It might be easier if they were on speaking terms—but then, maybe it wouldn't.

Shane Hollander looks abruptly, immensely pleased. Oliver has no idea what he's said to make him look like that, but he'll do anything for it to happen again.

“Shane,” Ilya is saying. “Are you okay?”
All Shane can bring himself to do is let out a quiet hum, muffled against Ilya’s skin.
There’s a pause. Ilya’s nails gently scratch at Shane’s scalp.
“Can you look at me? Hm?” Ilya coaxes. There’s a certain quality to his voice, now. Soft. Shane can’t place it.
Still, he slowly tilts his head, peering up at Ilya. He has to look up so far when he’s crouching like this. His neck is nearly craned all the way.
“Zayka,” Ilya murmurs affectionately, his hand sliding down from Shane’s hair to cradle the side of his face.
The threads suddenly come together in Shane’s mind. He pulls away from Ilya’s hand as though burned, embarrassment gripping him.
“Don’t, Ilya,” he says. It sounds more like a plea rather than an admonishment.

After seeing Shane fuzzy for the first time, Ilya comes to the cottage with gifts. Shane reckons with this, and reckons with letting himself be small around Ilya.
