Summary
Fresh blood blossomed through ridges in the stone.
It’s alive. Every blood cell slowly dying in the flowing plasma is alive. The torn muscle tissue and spilled bone marrow is alive. If she tunes her mind to it, if she turns on that ‘rainbow eye’, as her old disciple called it, she can feel all of it, the dying motor neurons, the bacteria and amoeba drowning as the blood branches over the rocks like a droning background choir. She can also simply ignore it, like it isn’t even there.
The “monster” is cleaved in two. The armour forged in the beginning of the world, and the swords pulled from the ‘mountain of many colours’ cannot stay stained in blood or death, because they bear the essence and mark of Life, and every drop and stain on them hums away and dissolves in a static, neon glow.
The shivering girl at the end of the cave was fated to die to the monster. It was supposed to happen. But it was not so long ago that Death trespassed into her territory, and took life that was meant to live - at least, not from her point of view. So why shouldn’t she be able to rebalance the scales?

If Melia had tears left, she might have cried. But instead the sound that comes out of her throat is closer to a laugh, even as she rubs at dry eyes with one hand, and Melia makes the first play.
