“Oh, Olly,” he says, his voice thick with emotion—the kind Olruggio has long since learned to ignore. It has become so familiar that it takes him a moment to recognize it now. So it comes as a surprise when Qifrey lifts a hand to his cheek, gently brushing his thumb across it.
Olruggio remembers what it is like to love Qifrey. It is in moments like these, when there is no oxygen left in his lungs, that he doesn't need to hold himself back, because any words would be nothing more than wind on his lips. He cannot let Qifrey hear them.

Summary
"You're as warm as ever, you know that?" Qifrey tells Olruggio as they tidy the study before bed. Ink stains their fingers, and Qifrey steps into Olruggio's space, thumb licked to drag across the high of his cheek to rid it of ink, too.
"Hey, now," Olruggio ducks out of the way, fingers curling around Qifrey's wrist. "I can clean up after myself just fine."
"And if I wanted to care for you?"
The silence that falls between them is more than simple contemplativeness. This time, Olruggio takes in a breath, as if to speak, before stopping. He releases Qifrey's hand, but Qifrey does not move. He lets fingers trace over Olruggio's palm, and down his wrist, then back up, as if touch is a novelty.

Summary
He let the tiny silvery beads of lies thread themselves onto a string pulled much too tight to fit them all. And often he wondered when, or if, he would be allowed to tear through the strain and scatter them free.
Though he never pushed, it didn't seem wise, as every time Qifrey would avert his gaze and give him one of his similarly practiced laughs. The corner of his eye would lift, and his mouth would quiver and morph into a thin brushstroke of a smile—the very same one Olruggio had taught him all those years back. A shared skill of deception he could never take back.
The night after coming home from Silver Eve, Olruggio is wide awake, watching Qifrey sleep in his embrace. In the dim moonlight, he sees something he is not quite certain to be tears.
