His hazel eyes flicked back to the contents of the vase taking in the bright, cheerful sunflowers, with their yellow petals almost offensively alive against the earthy tones of his living room. Eight of them, maybe nine, stems cut at slightly different lengths. Robby had arranged them carefully. It’s easy to picture him doing it, brow furrowed in concentration as he decided which one went where.
A stupid thing to some, an ordinary thing to others, a loving thing to those who dare to dream. But to Jack it felt like a goodbye.

She could tell him the truth. That every condolence card feels like a small fresh violence. That she keeps reaching for her phone to text Benji stupid little things and then remembering.
Instead, she says, “I’m upright.”
