They are content in the isolation of their forests, away from the plunder of lumber and smoke of fires. Loftwings will never again chain their freedom to human souls, allowing themselves to be leashed. The only shadow of wings overhead are embroidered into banners.
Proxi can’t imagine loving something that much— to willingly fly into a cage.

Emma, with scraped knees and a chipped tooth smile against a face stained with freckles. Emma who still raced her siblings to breakfast and pretended to lose. Emma, staying up for hours to learn the morse code in Minerva’s books, falling asleep in the library. Emma with burn marks on her calloused hands. Emma, auburn hair stained with blood, the smoldering house behind them still not quite burning as much as the determination in her eyes.
Emma who got into fights knew she couldn’t win if there was even a chance of saving someone. Emma, promising to strangers she had never even met, that they would all get out of this hunting ground alive.
I don’t care what it takes, Ray vowed as Emma grew colder by the second, so unlike sunlit days dragging him from the shade, with warm smiles and soft blankets and bitter tea and old books.
I won’t let that happen again.
I’m not going to let you die!

And probably has been all morning based on the way he was running around? Just perfect. She can work with this. She can do this. All Zelda has to do is avoid Link for an hour or so! It can’t be too difficult…right?

The bodyguard stopped to stare him down. Its gums pulled back into a smile before it laughed, blood coating its teeth. The man limped, as much as he could, back down the alley.
He didn’t turn back to the plaza. Which can only mean he is more afraid of admitting someone got into the building. He can’t get any help going back inside.

The person she had built out of nothing over these past two years seemed so insignificant now. The girl who had dealt with lonely nights all alone with no idea of who she had been or would ever be. The curiosity she had cultivated from somewhere in the remains of her soul, the determination she had dragged back from the depths of her mind— all of that work to make herself into someone she could be proud of meant nothing. Because Emma loved those strangers that were supposed to be her family more than herself and it was terrifying.
