Summary
He could feel it, the scratch at his throat. A light roughness, nothing too apparent at first. Perhaps his throat was just a little more dry than usual. It wouldn’t be too surprising since his body is still adapting to the human realm once again.
Then his head would hurt, headaches that pounded behind the eyes in an aching rhythm. A migraine he assumes. Those symptoms started getting worse. At times he could feel his energy dwindle faster, as if a ton of bricks were chaining him down. He told no one, assuming it would pass on its own. And considering he masked it pretty well, no one noticed.
That was, until, the current mission he, Nero, and Dante went on.
Or: Vergil gets sick on a mission, feelings ensue.

Summary
"What the fuck, old man?!"
Now, although Dante is not entirely happy with the "old man" title, the first part of the sentence reflects his feelings on the matter perfectly. Lying among the garbage bags, he squints his eyes to get a good look at the attacker. But the sun is shining right into his eyes, and all he can see at the moment is a bright hair color, short stature, slim build and an elongated form in his hand. And a voice that, when the little shit starts yelling again, sounds quite high-pitched and young. And very, very angry.
"First you fuck off somewhere after damping a load of dramatic bullshit on me and now you are here? With a guitar case, of all things?! What are you, a pretty rock band singer now? Do you even have a slightest idea what I've been feeling all this time?! I... I thought you dead-"
Then he suddenly stops and looks at Dante intently. Something changes in his eyes, and then his gaze switches to the remains of the red coat, which Dante continues to hold in his hand.
"Oh," he says.Or: AU, where Dante is a little more adept at catching his brother, Vergil (just a little bit) - at being a father and Mundus needs a little more time to come up with his Evil Scheme.

When Nero had first seen Dante drop in through the ceiling of the church, shoot Sanctus, then turn to survey the crowd. His first thought hysterically had been.
‘Are you my father?’
He'd felt immediately stupid after. This wasn't a damn Dr. Seuss book. He however, could definitely be excused for the thought. After all how many people had the same white hair and the same shade of uncanny blue for their eyes?
That wasn't even mentioning the face shape. It was hard to tell from a distance, but even so it looks so much like the face he saw in the mirror.

Dante settled into the worn, faded cushions of the seat, a soft chuckle escaping his lips as he glanced at his brother. “Do you remember what we used to do as kids?” he teased, his eyes twinkling with nostalgia.
Vergil's face contorted into one of absolute revulsion, his lip curling in disdain. He pierced Dante with a sharp, contemptuous gaze that seemed to dismiss the very notion. “Absolutely not, Dante,” he retorted, his voice dripping with irritation. “I will not engage in such a ridiculous charade,” he spat.Vergil may be a master at many forms of battle, but fatherhood? That's one conflict he still needs to figure out. Dante proposes an unconventional solution when Nero's birthday approaches: a good old-fashioned twin switch. For once, it's not the worst idea his younger brother has had—much to his reluctant acceptance at the wager of competing with his brother. There's just one catch: Vergil must stumble through maintaining his brother's chaotic persona...

Dante's convinced that the best part of returning from Hell is getting to eat pizza again. Seeing his favorite nephew is an added bonus.
When their impromptu family reunion ends up going far worse than he'd have liked, Dante quickly realizes that Nero isn't as fine as he thought the kid would be. His behavior is uncannily close to how Dante acted after he was forced to kill Nelo Angelo.
Talking things out was never Dante's strong suit but he figures he's gotta do something before he loses the family he'd just put back together.

The words sounded trivial, but the meaning was much deeper. Silence permeated the space between the two men, the bottle freezing in its place at the edge of Nero’s lips. His eyes glistened for a moment, familiar blues flickering to Dante, then away again.

The voice continues, “Hey, down here.”
Vergil complies against his better judgment, but it takes him a second to realise where the sound is even supposed to be coming from. It's only when his shadow's left hand, the one not clutching the Yamato, moves of its own accord to rub against his shadow's face that he realises what must be happening. A shadow cannot be fought so easily, but even intangible demons can be bested. He must bide his time. His eyes narrow at the offending invader and he voices, “Who are you?"
There’s a slight pause, as the shadow tilts its head. Finally, it replies, “The name’s Nero. And don’t scowl too much, it makes you look older than you are.”
