Even if you aren't actually a part of it, just the act of excusing yourself was rude. You should listen to what the other person has to say. Be present. Smile at all the right places, laugh when it's appropriate.

    He was way too young when he understood the nuances of a dinner party in that way. Had been sat, wriggling in a too-big chair without a booster seat, eyes nearly level with the table, unable to get either one of his parent's attention because it would be rude to say he needed to go to the restroom.
