    “And you?” she asked, though she didn’t know why. “Are you okay?”

    Any trace of a smile was gone as he watched her. “I don’t know.” His voice was a whisper. She felt like a whole world was turning behind his eyes, cast in shadow, beyond the light. “But I will be.”
