    !**SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY**!

    In the memory that he and Jean had shared, the sun had been warm against his skin. It had smelled like his old room at May’s. Like laundry, old paint, Bath and Bodywork candles, a metallic tinge of soldering. He had looked at Jean in that afternoon sun and he had known her. He knew the contours of her soul and the shape of her thoughts and the deep, deep, gaping hole inside of her. He had shown her the void inside of him and they had known each other down to their bones. It had meant something and of course she’d leave, it made the most sense for both of them. But it still broke Peter’s stupid soft heart which does nothing ever but break over and over.

    “Where is Jean?” Peter asks, his eyes still closed.

    He already knows the answer. She’s on a park bench in autumn. She’s on a bus watching beams of sunlight slip through the trees. She’s slipping through his fingers like May, like Ned and MJ, like Mr. Stark, like Ben. He’ll never find her again. She’s gone.

    But Frank huffs again. Which is not the response Peter expected.

    “I had scoliosis,” Peter whispered, not looking away from where they’d heard the metal snap. He had gone pale. Bucky was sure he was a few shades lighter, himself. “That’s… that’s what I was gonna say before."

    “Yeah?” Bucky asked. He loosened his grip on Peter’s shoulder, but didn’t take his hand away.

    “My back still hurts sometimes,” Peter explained quietly. “But that might be because of the swinging. Hard to find a strong enough chiropractor to crack it, you know? Maybe… maybe two thousand tons of concrete would do it, though.” Bucky leveled his gaze at the kid. Peter looked back at him, swallowing hard.

    “Let’s call that Plan B, okay?” Bucky suggested.

    “Yeah, okay,” Peter mumbled.

    Or, Peter gets caught in the collapse of a parking garage with a (mildly) concussed Bucky Barnes, and has a nice get-to-know-you sesh with our favorite super soldier while waiting for Tony to find a safe way get them out. Super chill, right? Everything's fine. Oh- and he's been impaled by two rods of rebar and can't move without risking bleeding out. That... complicates things.

    Peter fell quiet for a long moment, still quivering slightly. And then, barely a whisper:

    "Just . . . hold me?"

    MJ said nothing, because she was afraid of how she would sound when she spoke. Instead, she just wrapped herself fully around him, cradling him to her chest and letting him bury his face in her neck as he curled impossibly tighter into himself and into her, letting out a shuddering sigh that she felt rather than heard.

    Peter is having a rough day with his sensory issues. MJ is there to offer comfort, even if Peter hesitates to ask for it.
