"All this was to say that despite it all, Gregory somehow had his head above water. Barely, but he kept himself alive, fed, and under a roof for as long as he’d been away from his last Foster home.
The dingy apartment he rented, plus food and utilities and taxes and a phone, were paid for himself. How? With long hours at customer service jobs. He’d been through 4 of them until he’d ended up here somehow, in the daycare of a massive pizza mall that he couldn’t have so much as dreamed of coming to during his sorry excuse of a childhood.
It was a long shift, during a long week of similar shifts, making just enough hours that he could make rent on time this month. Turns out that the same chipper music grinding into your ears and bright lights burning into your eyes could grate on your nerves, let alone working with dozens of screeching children and their little child problems, and-

Summary
Things aboard the Hail Mary are not good. Yáo has woken up only to discover that his science officer is a Little. To make matters worse, he finds out that Stratt has dosed Grace with a powerful, experimental suppressant, meaning he cannot go into his headspace.
She did not account for the fact that Yáo and Ilyukhina are Caregivers who now also cannot go into their headspaces. Nobody has any outlet for their stress, and things quickly spiral.
Or: Stratt makes a big misjudgement, and nobody is having a good time about it.

Sussie squawked, and he hopped down to her dresser drawers. Rumi eyed him, not sure what the bird was up as he pecked at the handle. Before she could ask, though, Sussie got the drawer opened, and he hopped inside.
“What are you d—”
His little head emerged with a pacifier in his beak.
“Hey!” Rumi hissed, hopping to her feet. Her face burned as she ran after Sussie, but the bird flew over to her bed’s headboard. “Give me that!” Rumi fussed as quietly as she could. The last thing she needed to do was wake up Mira or Zoey with this. She snatched the pacifier out of Sussie’s beak and glared at him. “How’d you know about this?” she asked. Sussie squawked.
