Summary
Stoick the Vast, under the advisement of his best friend, had intended to allow his son into dragon training with the other kids his age, but he allowed his son to speak first and decided to honor his wishes. Hiccup would not fight dragons, and as a result, fate moved slightly to the left.
Hiccup would not use what he learned while befriending Toothless to move up the ranks in dragon training and gain the attention of the entire village and the ire of Astrid. Instead, he would slowly fade into the background until no one even realized when he was missing from the village for days or even weeks at a time.
Most importantly, his connection to dragons wouldn't be exposed to the world for quite some time.
Which worked out for him and Toothless as the two had a growing flock to protect and rule as the draconic Kings of the Wilderwest.

Summary
The dragon peered into the hatchling's green eyes, searching for... something... though he couldn't tell you what. Every instinct in his body told him to finish the job, to end this future Tyrant before he became a bigger problem. It was what the conclave expected of him; what the council demanded of him. And yet, he hesitated still. Would a future Tyrant really have let him go? He had been felled by a mere cub; trapped, injured, and vulnerable. It would have been so easy for this hatchling to take his life. Instead, he had cut the ropes that bound him and set him free. What kind of Tyrant would do something so merciful?
Or, the one where Toothless is sent to kill Hiccup before he can become a dragon killing Tyrant like his father, but instead chooses to show him a different path instead.
